As one of the most beloved flowering plants on Earth, Lavender is well represented by hundreds of varieties, carefully cultivated for their fragrance, color, growth habits and other special characteristics. It's a big, messy family that still manages to be surprising and rewarding to gardeners, perfumers, crafters, artists and anyone else who appreciates the beauty of nature.

What follows is a list of lavender cultivars broken into four foundational (true) lavender groups, English lavender, Spike lavender, French lavender and Spanish lavender.

New cultivars are being developed every year, so this list of lavender cultivars is not exhaustive, but it does represent a number of well known varieties on the market.

English Lavender, (Lavandula angustifolia)

English Lavender is the quintessential lavender, known for its compact, bushy form and fragrant blue-purple flowers. This cold-hardy favorite (zones 5-9) thrives in sunny locations with well-drained soil. English lavender's classic beauty makes it ideal for borders, edging, and containers. Many cultivars on the market capture English lavender's unique characteristics. Here are some of the major players as well as a few interesting additions.

Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia)

While not a single species itself, this term sometimes refers to Lavandin hybrids (Lavandula x intermedia) or tall-growing Lavandula latifolia plants. These lavenders are popular for their impressive flower spikes in shades of purple and blue, adding a bold statement to landscapes (zones 5-9). Their strong fragrance makes them ideal for borders and backgrounds, while their heat tolerance allows them to thrive in warmer climates. 

Cultivars:
  • Alba (Lavandula latifolia 'Alba'): A unique offering with pure white flowers on tall flower stalks, creating an elegant display. Less common than varieties with purple blooms.
  • Dutch Lavender (Lavandula latifolia): This term can sometimes be used generically for Lavandin cultivars, but there may be some specific Lavandula latifolia selections available under this name. It's important to confirm botanical details with the distributor.
  • Fragrant Delight (Lavandula latifolia 'Fragrant Delight'): As the name suggests, this cultivar offers a strong, pleasant fragrance alongside its tall blue flower spikes.
  • Hidcote Blue Improved (Lavandula latifolia 'Hidcote Blue Improved'): This vigorous grower has tall, sturdy stems with large, dark blue flower spikes. It's a more robust version of the classic Hidcote Blue (typically associated with Lavandin).
  • Hidcote Blue (Lavandula latifolia 'Hidcote Blue'): This name is more commonly associated with Lavandin cultivars (Lavandula x intermedia). While some Lavandula latifolia selections may be referred to as Hidcote Blue Improved, it's important to confirm the botanical classification (Lavandula latifolia) to ensure desired characteristics.
  • Tudor (Lavandula latifolia 'Tudor'): This upright cultivar features tall, dense flower spikes in a deep purple hue. It's known for its strong fragrance and extended blooming period.
Lavandin Cultivars (Lavandula x intermedia):
  • Grosso (Lavandula x intermedia 'Grosso'): Large, deep purple flower spikes, strong fragrance.
  • Provence (Lavandula x intermedia 'Provence'): Large, fragrant blue-purple flowers.

French Lavender (Lavandula dentata)

This unique lavender (zones 7-9) stands out with its woody texture and serrated leaves. It offers fragrant foliage, and its flowers are generally less showy than other lavenders and have a stronger, more resinous scent.  French lavender does well in warmer climates and Is a good candidate for use in borders, hedges, and containers. Popular cultivar: 'Goodwin Creek Grey'.
